Post engagement can do wonders for you If you know how to use it properly.

It makes a lot of sense thats the "easiest" way to get followers. If you write a good post that 10 people see, you have a potential of getting 10 followers. If you comment a great comment on a post the 1000 people see, you can get 1000 followers :) It's a great way to get eyeballs while you're starting out!
And ofc. actually interacting with others on the platform is way more fun for everyone involved
