We Don't Wanna Die Young

in #black7 years ago (edited)

I'm a black male 29 originally from Brooklyn New York. There seems to be a stigma in my community and in general society that young black men especially love to be a part of violence, death, destruction and all forms of evil. When I watch television I see very few inspiring roles played by black men other than Will Smith and Don Cheadle. When i walk my daughter to the bus stop an elderly white woman at the front of my division always locks her screen door and closes the main door as soon as I walk by. When I walked back in my home to catch up on the news, I see cnn airing a story about the gang war among young black males in chicago http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/04/us/chicago-july-fourth-violence/index.html. Then it clicked in my brain, people are not born prejudice or scared of black people they're taught. The elder lady in front of my division may have been watching the same stations I've been seeing all of my life that portrayed people that look like me to be savages, 3/5 a human. If prejudice could be created within one race of people against the other race, I thought, wouldn't it be possible for that race to become prejudice against themselves as well. The shootings and murders carried out by young black man at an alarming rate would leave one to believe , black men want to die young. It makes sense to me now, young black men shoot at and kill each other because they're trained to from the time they turn on the television, go to the movies or their favorite entertainment site. When I go to www.worldstarhiphop.com all I see are images of young black men and women fighting each other sprinkled with a few videos of other races of people doing frowned upon things as well. This is deeper than the surface. Worldstarhiphop.com was created by a black man (God rest his soul) who saw no wrong in uploading demeaning content featuring poor black people because he was used to seeing it, it was of no effect to him. The young man that killed the other young man in chicago grew up seeing the previously mentioned above images as well as seeing the same images within his own neighborhood leading him to follow what he felt was his only path, designed especially for him and people like him. When young black men in Chicago kill another young black man they laugh and post videos of it, however when their loved one gets killed they cry, proving these young men do not completely lack a conscious. Could it be that they have been living a life on autopilot and nobody stopped them to show them a different way and now they're so old they feel no other way is even possible? Could it be that when a young black man in Chicago wants to walk to the corner store for a bag of chips he may be killed by another young black man, therefore he keeps a weapon as a form of protection for his own life? Could it be that these young black men in fact don't want to die but want to live and just don't know how? As a young black man I am telling you, we don't wanna die some of us just don't know how to live. Thank you for your time.

Its a shame during this day in age we still have to deal with the prejudice of people because of other individuals ignorance. Thank you for the facts and this is a big wake up call for not just young black men but for many people as well.
