The cursed village

A village here in India has not seen a child birth in the past 400 years. Yes, you read it absolutely right. Villagers say that the village was cursed by a goddess back in the 16th century when a woman distracted the construction workers, that were working on the temple dedicated to the goddess, by grinding wheat on the grindstone. This sounds bizarre, what is a woman supposed to do? Wait till the temple is constructed? Well, that would surely take years and she obviously cannot wait years to feed her family with bread right?

The villages have been buying this superstition for 400 years and they believe it to be true. Every woman has to travel to a hospital outside their village to get her baby delivered. It is not always that the woman make it to the hospital and that's the reason that villages have constructed a room just outside the village to help in cases of such emergencies.

Woman nearing child birth are carried to this room on the village border on stretchers even during rains. The locals believe that the child born within the limits of this village would either die or be deformed. Ask these villagers and they are quick to say that they have had examples in the past.

Women in this village have no qualms about travelling all the way to that room outside the village even when they are in excruciating pain if that was the need to give birth to a healthy baby. The villagers have been successfully working it out and are happy about the same, so I guess there is no fretting.
