Bitfi Hardware wallet

in #bitfi6 years ago

Just purchased one of these "unhackable" wallets a couple of weeks ago, hot off the press! $120 USD (+ $30 intl shipping, item arrived about 3 days later). A very good deal, I paid about same for a Trezor.

So far, seems to be a very robust and most important, super secure wallet. I have a Trezor already, and the bitfi is much more sleek, basically a phone that's been converted to being used as a cryptocurrency wallet. The website interface is very professionally done and easy to use. The wallet operates over wifi and a memorizable 7 word/ min. 35 character password is the key to its security. Bitfi recommends a difficult password but one that you can commit to memory thus no paper storage required, ergo a unhackable wallet!

To produce a unique password, I used their recommended Diceware method which uses a die (=one dice, the wallet includes one and a nice blue case for the device, see pic) that is repeatedly rolled to produce 7 sets of 5 numbers. This will generate an 'entropy-induced' [i.e. random] set of words when looked up in the diceware document (all linked from the bitfi website) which can then be chosen as is, mixed up or substituted with other words/characters. The idea is a random password is chosen that would take trillions of years to crack.

The password is only required when sending funds from the wallet so I have been loading funds into without even firing up the device. The website interface supports quite a few coins, the main ones being BTC, ETH, LTC and Monero (supposedly this is the only hardware wallet for Monero). Even if someone hacks into your account on the web, no funds can be transferred without the device being on and connected and the password being entered into the device itself.

If the wallet is lost, stolen, damaged or otherwise unusable, one can just order another one and set it up using the same password to access the same account. If you are thinking you were to be kidnapped and forced to reveal the password, a dummy account could be setup beforehand and this dummy account revealed instead of the real one.

Pros: nice looking, seems to be as they say unhackable, good website, easy to use.

Cons: (all minor) side button very small and a PITA to press in order to turn on especially when in the case, device on-screen characters and keyboard very small (a touch pen would help).
