Hackers steal latest Pirates of the Caribbean film, demand Bitcoins

in #bitcoin7 years ago

Hackers claim to have stolen the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film.

I believe it would be Pirates of the Caribbean 5 at this point?! (I have lost count)

The hackers are demanding that Disney pay "a large sum of bitcoins" or the film will be released early.

Specifics...

The first 5 minutes of the film would be released first.

If the ransom is still not paid, the rest of the film will be released in 20 minute segments.

The film is scheduled to be released on May 26th, which means that the hackers could be releasing parts of the film at any time.

So far, Disney has refused to pay anything to the hackers.

Neflix faced similar situation

A similar situation faced Netflix recently when episodes of Orange is the New Black were stolen and released early.

Netflix played hardball with the hackers, not paying the ransom, and it didn't seem to impact their business too much.

Disney, however, has much more to lose if the hackers were to release the film early. For example, lets say word got around that the film was not very good before it hits theaters, it could greatly impact ticket sales.

Disney plans to continue to play hard ball with no plans to pay the ransom.

Good on them!

It will be interesting to see how this plays out this week.

lol..aint that some iiish? I wonder if theyll get away with it....i mean really.

They should announce where to download it with a steemit post. ;)

That would be amazing!

my wife and i love those movies and are looking forward to seeing the new one

There is a small chance you might get to see it early.

I'm all for the Robin Hood act - stealing the movies and releasing them for everyone - but this ransom nonsense isn't helping people at large and bringing negative attention to hackers and the cryptocurrency scene.

Perhaps. Although, is this a case where bad publicity is still good publicity?

Oh, another criminal activity that associates Bitcoin on its transaction transaction. Instead of besmirching the reputation of Bitcoin, it becomes more popular that it is now more mainstream and the price is skyrocketing.
Bad news for Disney but every challenges thrown at Bitcoin just turned out good for them. Throw them lemon and they will turn it to lemonade. Bitcoin is an idea whose time has come, no one can stop it.
Thanks for sharing the news. I love it! Followed you...

Yes. The more it is in the news the better. No matter the reason. Thank you!

Disney must know that no one would bother to download it!

I think they don't think they will actually release it. Paying them would set a bad precedence going forward.

Seems as though everyone is wanting a piece of the bitcoin pie! Waiting to see how this all pans out for Disney.

If something is going to happen, it will be this week. The film gets released on Friday.

All the hackers want Bitcoin, smart guys they are.

I am not too worried about the public image after this, Bitcoin will win on its merits alone.

I agree. I tend to be in the camp of "any publicity is good publicity" at this point. Just keep Bitcoin and crypto in the news every day and we keep going higher.

Lol. I have to say, I don't feel bad for Disney at all. The only reason that film was made (or any of the sequels, and perhaps even the original) was because everyone involved had a dump truck full of money unloaded on their driveway.
