Corrupted files introduced in the Bitcoin Gold wallet
A hacker managed to introduce corrupted files into the download data of Bitcoin Gold's official wallet. These corrupt wallets would therefore present a big security risk, which could compromise the funds and personal data of those who downloaded them.
Corrupted files introduced in the Bitcoin Gold wallet
The Bitcoin Gold development team released a "Critical Alert" on its blog on November 26th. This alert announced that from November 21, all users who downloaded the official wallet of Bitcoin Gold - either on the official website or on GitHub - also received two files of unknown origin.
It seems very likely that these files were added for malicious purposes, potentially to steal funds or personal data. The Bitcoin Gold team posted a warning:
"Anyone who has downloaded the Windows Wallet file between 21 November 2017, 09:39 UTC and 25 November 22:30 UTC should not use it. If the file has been used on a computer, it must be handled with care; the file must be deleted, the machine polled fully for malware and viruses (or even formatted), and all cryptocurrency with wallets accessible on this machine must be moved to new wallets immediately. »The Bitcoin Gold Team
Bitcoin Gold: a week, an attack
It seems that Bitcoin Gold is the target of all fires these days! We remember, at launch, the official site had suffered a DDoS attack, leaving it offline for nearly four hours.
Some miners then had the unpleasant surprise of discovering so-called "hidden" fees in the BTG code. These fees were not secret, but the controversy was still launched, as the ground is conducive to dissension. To top it off, one of the wallets officially recommended by the Bitcoin Gold team turned out to be a resounding scam. Indeed, MyBtgWallet had for a time claimed to work jointly with the official team, eventually disappearing with more than 3 million dollars in cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin Gold is therefore taking its first steps on a road full of pitfalls. Hope this fork will meet the challenges and deliver on its promises!
