The traditional logistics process is extremely complex and inefficient. It involves a huge bulk of manual documentation. Just one shipment between two countries requires at least 200 different documents which have to be handled manually and that increases the cost unnecessarily. Ironically the administrative cost of a shipment is more than the execution cost. There is a long list of documents which have to be administered even for shipping just one parcel, these documents include invoice, Air Way Bill, Bill of Lading, Packing List, Certificate of Origin, various declarations and licenses. In order to manually handle this huge bulk of documentation, large teams of employees are required both at the shipping end and at the receiving end.

Smart Containers Group has successfully identified the problem and has introduced an innovative idea to tackle the issue. The idea is to create a fully integrated, blockchain based trusted and transparent logistics ecosystem that would be open to all the concerned parties. This ecosystem has been named LOGI CHAIN and it will eliminate the manual paper work including email communication. The next step will be to make the automated billing of the containers used in the execution of a shipment, thorough smart contracts and the payments through cryptocurrencies. This will be done by linking the necessary documents to the smart container chip which will allow all the concerned parties including shipper, customs, freight forwarder and the buyer to access the data through blockchain infrastructure.

However, depending upon the nature of documents, some documents will be available for everyone to be viewed on Ethereum and the sensitive documents will be available only to the concerned parties on a permissioned blockchain infrastructure. This whole process will reduce the manual work by eliminating the paper documentation, will help in cutting the operational cost and will make the service much more efficient.
