Great question! To answer a question with a question - do you believe in the fundamental idea of cryptocurrency and the blockchain? If you believe that this technology will be as transformative as lots of really smart people seem to think it will be, then its not too late. There may be short term price drops (possibly severe!) but the long term story looks good.
Despite difficulty is increasing, and Ethereum will switch to Proof of stack, it's never too late! If you like messing with hardware, you can start to mine Ethereum and when it'll be unprofitable, switch you mining power to another Altcoin! Burst sounds like a good alternative in term of efficiency, an HDD consumes less power than a fully loaded GPU!

Buy when cheap, sell, if you need to, when expensive :)
