Ledger Nano S Does not work!!!!!!! FUCK MY LIFE! August 1st is coming! Coinbase not supporting both chains!

So I decided to buy a Ledger Nano S to deal with the upcoming UASF in case a hardfork occurs. I am doing this because Coinbase has said they are not going to support both chains, to me this tells me they plan to steal the duplicate tokens. So my ledger arrived today, and the device does not work. It is not recognizable by their own wallet application. I am unable to get electrum wallet to work on any device I own, it keeps freezing in the setup.

Even after plugging in the ledger and putting in the pin to unlock it, nothing changes in this app. There is nothing to click on, the app just waits for you to connect the ledger, so clearly it is not recognizing the ledger. It happens on both of my devices which are new computers as of 1 and 3 months ago.

The decline in bitcoin price hasn't made me feel any panic at all, but the thought of getting caught with my pants down during a hard fork is causing me serious panic all of a sudden. I thought I was going to buy the Ledger and it would be simple and easy to setup and move my bitcoin to so that I am supported for both coins in the event of a fork. That did not happen.

If anyone can offer any advice in the comments it would be greatly appreciated. I need to get my coins off coinbase and I like the security a hardware wallet offers. I am afraid of using a desktop wallet in the event that I am unknowingly key logged. I have tried a bootable USB with Linux before, but I was unable to get linux to properly function on either of my devices. I tried 7 version of linux and they all presented the same problems. On my laptop, the screen goes haywire and streaks the menu bar across the whole screen. On my PC the keyboard gets disabled in linux and won't work until I return to windows and unplug it.

I'm normally a really calm and cool person but this is causing me an incredible amount of stress and anxiety. I can't think or focus on anything else. I don't see myself as a panic seller, but I'm temped to panic sell over the fact that I can't control my coins.

Any help is appreciated, feel free to message me on steem.chat

you should open the settings on the device itself and disable browser support. (at least that worked for me, using Chrome)

lol no wonder you can't get it to work, you watch Trevon James lol

I didn't listen to him about the Ledger.

Sorry to hear about this. I know people say your an idiot if you keep your money on an exchange but after hearing about people having issues with electrum, ledger, trezor, etc not really sure who to trust lol.

Did Coinbase come out and say they wouldn't support both chains? I thought they had just kept silent but I could have sworn someone posted something on here or another forum that alluded to Bitcoin giving you both chains as long as it was in the vault as opposed to regular wallet, although not sure why that mattters.

Their words were they intend to do what they can to ensure customers "Value" is maintained. To me that says they will be issuing their customers what they believe is the "real" bitcoin, and keeping the other tokens like they did with Ethereum Classic.

They did eventually release the ETC. I think them stealing the duplicate would literally be the nail in their coffin. Sorry to hear about all of your troubles in the past. I have done Ubuntu bootables that were quite useable in the past for drive formatting while authoring DCPs.

The linux issues sound like you may need to track down GPU firmware for linux before attempting a bootable. Have that available so you can update the stock firmwares included in the OS. The keyboard issue is again sounding firmware related possibly a USB firmware... is the keyboard plugged into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 slot? It may not come as a bootable and be able to use 3.0.

I know their were plugins installed to make our Trezor work. Is it possible you are using an unsupported browser or it requires a version of Java to work that you have disabled for security reasons?

It's a newer computer so I'm assuming USB 3.0. Seems like a lot of work lol. I would prefer to keep my coins on coinbase. I know everyone says it isn't the safe thing to do because they could get hacked, but I believe they keep less then 1% of the coins in their hot wallets. So in the event of a loss due to a hack they would retain 99% of their funds. I cannot say the same for myself if I was to get hacked holding my own coins...

The danger really is that you don't own your private keys with Coinbase...they do. I live in New York and with the local laws and fed depts we have to deal with here protecting wallstreet... Coinbase is a nightmare and can freeze assets without warning or stated reason, but we're stuck with them.

Yeah, they are the best at what they do. With a Ledger I don't control my private keys though, so it's the same thing isnt' it?

if it works like a trezor you hold your private keys on the nano.

I wanted to get a Ledger but backorder is so long you think Trezor is worth getting in the interum?

I was going for Trezor but it's backordered... So I ordered a Ledger from amazon and paid like double...

Just get any bitcoin wallet like exodus or something on you computer. Put your bitcoin in that and don't use it until you can see that it is safe. No worries mate.

I do not trust myself enough with my own computer security. I'm just too busy and not up to date enough with it.

Did you tried Knoppix? A very light Linux, good for troubleshooting.
I don't use a hardware wallet but I put private keys in a crypted file and I make backups of it.

Thats how I wanted to do it. I'll give it a try, thanks

Your btc is still safe if you have the 24 word seed
It uses standard Bitcoin HD determination.

Make sure in the Bitcoin settings of the ledger you have browser support turned off.

Contact ledger if you have any problems with their device. They are pretty much foolproof.

Very good hardware wallet if you know what you are doing.

Thanks man, you seem to know what your talking about, I am gonna follow you. I haven't moved btc onto it yet, trying to get it going initially.

Yeah just try with a tiny amount.

I had some glitches kinda until I learned the ropes. Make sure you have ledger manager installed and see if that detects your ledger when it is unlocked. If that does not detect it then you might want to talk to ledger.

I'll keep that in mind too I am going to buy a ledger soon. As my crypto portfolio is growing. Hey which would you recommend "

It is most likely your Browser Support setting.

Select the wallet you are using > Select Settings > Select Browser Support > Make sure it is set to ' NO'.

If this does not work it might have to do with your cable. Please check your Ledger again with a different cable and see if this resolved the issue.
