We use it, as @otage mentioned, instead of private messaging. It is always active, and there are many groups, you can choose to add to your favourite group or server and add it to left side, so it's usable. Just play with it, and you will get used to it in no time.
Since we don't have private messaging yet here it is an offsite chat group where you can private message other users. People are already responding with votes : ) Today is a holiday so sometimes it is slow.
