Bitcoin mining is a technical process in which the transactions made using bitcoins are verified and added to a public ledger, known as the block chain. Also it is the means through which the new bitcoin are released over the network making it available for the users to buy it.

Mining in-depth: The algorithm involved in the process of generation of Bitcoins is called Proof of Work. Till today, more than 76% of the Bitcoins have already been minted by mining as currently it is 12.5 BTC/10 min which started as 50 BTC/10 min. This will go on till the last bitcoin is generated in the year 2140, i.e. 0.00000001 BTC and this cycle will be executed from year 2136 to 2140.
