Blockchain card game soon in closed beta
The blockchain powered collectible card game Gods Unchained will go into closed beta in 'the next couple of weeks'. Only players who have bought cards in advance, will be able to play the game. After that Fuel Games will organize a three month open beta, followed by the full launch.
Gods Unchained will be using non-fungible tokens (NFT) on the Ethereum blockchain. This means that each card is unique, and that gamers actually own their cards. Fuel Games has sold approximately 1.6 million cards so far, and the most notable event was the sale of one card in particular. The 'Mythic Hyperion' was sold for 146 ETH, which equaled over 60 thousand dollars back in July.
The game draws inspiration from genre classic Magic The Gathering, but also of Blizzard Entertainment's collectible card game Hearthstone. Gods Unchained is a fantasy-themed trading card game, and it already caught the attention of investor Coinbase Ventures, which participated in a $2.4 million funding back in May.
Gameplay of the game is very similar to other card-based games. But the knowledge that you - as a gamer - actually own these cards, adds a special layer to the game. Gamers can buy or sell their cards, whenever they want.
Fuel Games has decided it will not build the entire game on the blockchain, as that would slow the game down. On top of that, they don't want to deal with transaction costs. Instead Gods Unchained is running on Fuel's very own servers. The game is build in Unity, so it won't be a browser game neither.
Yet, Gods Unchained is still a blockchain game because of the cards based on NFT technology. All cards live on the blockchain as these non-fungible tokens. Because the cards exist on the blockchain, it won't be possible to nerf the game or make adjustments to some cards.
Gamers can already visit GodsUnchained.com and buy card packs. One rare card pack will cost 0.012 ETH ($2.12), while the most valuable pack of cards costs 1 ETH ($180). These cards are part of the 'Genesis Season', and can only be bought before launch of the game. After that a new set of cards will launch.
