The manufacturer of hardware portfolios for cryptocurrencies announces portfolios in native software that will be available in Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS, will not require Google Chrome or Chromium with support for 23 cryptocurrencies.

On Ledger's website, its CEO Eric Larcheveque announced the next generation of the Ledger Wallet application, which will not require Google Chrome or Chromium. He said:

"In early 2015, we introduced the Ledger Wallet Bitcoin Chrome app, a Google Chrome application designed to interact with our hardware portfolios, enabling simple and secure management of cryptocurrency transactions. This application was quickly followed by the native Ledger Wallet Ethereum and Ripple applications and the complementary applications of Chrome, which makes it possible to manage these cryptocurrencies with your Ledger hardware wallet. Three years later, after the massive growth of cryptocurrencies and the multiplication of altcoins and forks, it goes without saying that our interfaces were ready for a significant face-lift.

Today, we are pleased to announce the upcoming availability of our new generation of Ledger Wallet application, originally created for desktops and mobile devices, that brings together all cryptocurrencies in one unified place. This application will be available in Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS and will no longer require Google Chrome or Chromium. "

Initial functionality for the launch: A single application for all currencies

The initial release will bring all the current features compatible with all its different applications, but in a single unified and multi-currency application.

This is the full list of features of this first release:

  • Native desktop application (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Multiple cryptocurrencies (23, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and other altcoins, ...)
  • Multiple devices (Ledger Nano S, Ledger Blue)
  • Read-only query of accounts without device (protected by optional password)
  • Board view of all assets
  • Counter values: choice of currency and exchanges
  • Send, receive, account balances and history options
  • Confirmation before sending funds
  • Device verification of the receiving address
  • A faster account synchronization engine

In addition to this initial release, Ledger's teams are working on updates that will make the Ledger hardware wallets even easier to use (in particular, they include a full mobile experience, the ability to support many more cryptocurrencies on their Ledger Nano S and integrations of third-party applications). Here is a preview of the route map:

  • Mobile application version (Android and iOS)
  • Support Ledger Nano / HW.1
  • Option to install / uninstall applications in Ledger Nano S automatically to manage without problems an unlimited number of crypts in a device
  • Management of Ethereum ERC20 tokens and contracts
Integration of third-party applications (buy / sell cryptocurrencies, exchanges, swaps -pair exchanges- ...)
  • Transaction labels and notes
  • Spotlight type search, global search
  • Generation of more than one new address
  • Support for more than 100 cryptocurrencies
  • The new application will have its own set of native USB drivers. Google Chrome will no longer be required, but this will also break the compatibility with the Chromebook platform.

Ledger Manager

In addition, Ledger is working on a new version of the Ledger Manager platform. Soon it will become a web-based solution that involves direct communication via USB without the need to install any extension. Supported browsers include Google Chrome, Chromium and Opera. This new version will greatly enhance the user experience by bringing many new features, such as device information, firmware updates and applications, a quick overview of installed coins, categories and third-party applications.
