The suspect to organize the theft of 600 computers, used to mine crypto currencies, escaped from an Icelandic prison through the window and boarded a commercial flight to Sweden.

An almost movie story has agitated Iceland, the country with the lowest crime rates in the world. Sindri Thor Stefansson, supposed organizer of what the local press has called the 'big bitcoin theft', escaped from a prison and fled to Sweden. But not in any way, but traveling - by coincidence - in the same plane that took the prime minister of that country, Katrin Jakobsdottir, reports AP.

The man was held in a low security prison, located in a rural area 95 miles from Keflavík International Airport, and police believe he escaped through a window. The prison facility is not even fenced, and its inmates have free access to the internet and telephone.

Since Stefansson's trip was within the Shengen area, he probably did not have to show his passport, and perhaps his ticket was acquired under a false name. The local police are sure that he had an accomplice.

In addition to informing the Swedish police about the case, an international arrest warrant was issued in Iceland.

'The big theft of bitcoins'
Stefansson is suspected of being the 'brain' of the theft of a total of 600 computers, used to mine bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies, which was carried out in four rounds, between December and January. According to the agency, it is considered the biggest robbery in the country, known worldwide for its peaceful nature.

The computers, whose value is estimated at almost two million dollars, have not yet been found. According to AP, if the stolen equipment is used to create bitcoins, thieves can make huge profits.

If the large-scale robbery surprised the country, the biggest surprise has been the organized escape from a prison. "In Iceland, the escape from a prison normally means that someone simply escaped to get drunk," sociology professor Helgi Gunnlaugsson told The Guardian. In this small nation "it is extremely difficult to hide, and much more to flee the country," he explained.
