LBRY : "People's marketplace"

in #bitcoin7 years ago

The following post is an adapted and corrected translation of my original post. It’s an original document by @ marieta88 and not a "copy & paste". However, it contains links, references and quotes from various sources. It intends to be a brief presentation of the LBC cryptocurrency and the LBRY project. In case of arousing interest, it would be extended with great pleasure.

The project

LBRY is presented on its website as a decentralized and community-controlled library. In other words, if steemit pretends to be something like the “decentralized Facebook”, LBRY aspires to be the first “decentralized Amazon”. I personally expect and hope that the project will succeed, and I think it's an idea that could well have had the longed-for Aaron Swartz.

The team

Unlike in other cases, the LBRY team appears publicly and is formed by a group of super smart men like Jeremy Kauffman, who has founded numerous tech startups, like <<TopScore, a startup that processes millions of dollars monthly in event and activity registrations>>1.

Besides, they do not seem to be in a hurry and is taking care of every detail of the project. Therefore, LBRY is currently in invite only mode.

LBRY and LBC (LBRY Credits) are a protocol and a cryptocurrency, respectively. Something similar to what would be steemit (as a platform) and steem (as a criptocurrency). However, while steemit is a social network, LBRY aims to be an online marketplace where anyone can go to sell their digital products and buy those of other users.

Examples of marketplaces are eBay, Amazon, Rakuten, Etsy or Alibaba, that is to say, the big business of today, with the paradigmatic example of Jack Ma, one of the richest men in the world. However there would be 2 main differences between these platforms and LBRY, being the second consequence of the first:

  1. In LBRY there would be no commissions, no middlemen and no censorship.
  2. There would be a greater distribution of the wealth generated. And, to my liking, this distribution would be more fair.

The coin:

As I said before, LBRY credits, or LBC will be the exchange currency in LBRY. Currently, there are five ways to get LBC.

  1. Beta testers get an LBC gift. To a beta tester you have to contact the LBRY team on their Slack channel.
  2. Buy them on exchanges (Bittrex, Poloniex, Shapeshift, Changelly or BitSquare).
  3. Through Mining. There are already several pools.
  4. Hosting content.
  5. Publishing content in LBRY, which ,as I said before, is only in invite mode.

There were more than 700 cryptocurrencies available for trade in online markets, but I really think LBC well deserves to be one of the most successful ones. Do you agree?
