Is crypto an asset class?

The title of this article ends with an question mark because I don't know the answer myself and I'm very curious how you think about this topic.

First, what is an asset class for the investors in general?

An asset class is a group of securities that exhibits similar characteristics, behaves similarly in the marketplace and is subject to the same laws and regulations. The three main asset classes are equities, or stocks; fixed income, or bonds; and cash equivalents, or money market instruments. Some investment professionals add real estate and commodities, and possibly other types of investments, to the asset class mix.

This is my opinion: the crypto market is not yet an asset class because it is too speculative at this stage. At the moment, various investment companies (Fidelity, Goldman Sachs, JPM Morgan) are retiring to set up a specialized desk focused on crypto currencies. It is a sign that the market is being watched closely, but that the assett class is not yet fully regulated as an mature one.

Moreover, the legislation and regulation is a difficult issue, which in recent weeks caused the continuing losses on the markets. Regulation will come, but it is up to the business itself to actively respond to this. Cryto currencies are, in my view, very transparent, and have a huge advantage compared to our domestic fiat infrastructure. It is a matter of time before large companies embrace this way handling.

Conclusion. It is still an immature market, but I am convinced that it will be considered as a recognized asset class within 5 years. SO the investers nowadays are still early adopters.
