Why the cryptocurrency industry needs decentralized exchanges.

Thanks to Blockchain technology and the cryptocurrency, we, as a society are moving away from the need to rely on third parties. And are slowly, but surely headed towards a decentralized financial existence.

However, there seems to be a weak spot in the cryptocurrency industry. And that weakness is centralized exchanges.

Why are centralized exchanges bad for the Blockchain environment?
Well, for starters, centralized exchanges are a simple solution for global cryptocurrency trading. These platforms allow traders to buy, sell, and exchange cryptocurrencies for fiat or other coins.

But, centralized exchanges don’t take advantage of everything that decentralized Blockchain technology has to offer. For starters, over 99% of all cryptocurrency transactions go through these exchanges. It’s important to consider that client assets are almost always held on the exchanges themselves. Which makes them prime targets for hackers.

Additionally, there is always the risk of software dysfunctionality and transaction delays, which can result in missed opportunities, or even worse, significant losses – especially during peak load times. There is also always the chance that the exchange owners might run away with client assets. Uh-oh. Now, that’s obviously a big issue, and it does no good for global cryptocurrency adoption.

Why decentralized exchanges are the solution.
The main advantage of decentralized exchanges is their security and ability to encompass a truly global market.

Security? See, decentralized exchanges don’t hold user private keys or assets. Everything is powered by Blockchain technology, so, there is no central point of failure. And thus, there is no need to entrust a third party, in this case, the exchange team, with your personal assets. Which is a really, really big deal.

But, they do have their drawbacks. In the form of Blockchain scalability, subpar liquidity, and little support for fiat currencies.

How come we aren’t there yet?
Simple. The mass populace is not fully aware of the issues plaguing centralized exchanges. Decentralized exchanges require a bit more tech prowess and may be slightly inconvenient for new users. Lack of platforms that can run on multiple Blockchains. And as mentioned above, no fiat, and scalability issues.

But the truth of the matter is that once the industry grows exponentially, centralized exchanges will not be able to handle the astronomical volume, despite being convenient. Decentralized exchanges will surely be a hot topic in 2018. And who knows, perhaps both types of platforms will break through and co-exist in total harmony.
