Bitcoin drops $2,000 in value as South Korea announces planned trading ban

in #bitcoin7 years ago

South Korea is considering a law to ban cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin being traded on local exchanges.

Justice Minister Park Sang-ki said virtual currencies were "great concerns" and that the ministry was preparing a bill to ban trading.

However, South Korea's presidential office said later that a ban had not yet been finalised and was one measure being considered.

In South Korea, where bitcoin trades at around a 30% premium compared to other countries, the local price plunged as much as 21% after the minister’s comments.

Once a bill is drafted, legislation for an outright ban of virtual coin trading within South Korea will require a majority vote of the total 297 members of the National Assembly, a process that could take months or even years.

In a press conference, the South Korean Ministry of Strategy and Finance told local reporters that it had first heard of the Ministry of Justice’s cryptocurrency trading ban through media reports. The cryptocurrency task force participated by the central bank, MInistry of Finance, Ministry of Justice, and other agencies have not agreed upon the proposal.
