The British does not lose hope to take from the dump the old HDD, where the file with bitcoins was stored. Now they cost about $ 80 million

Yesterday, the Bitcoin exchange rate crossed the psychological threshold of $ 10,000, with the growth continuing, and now they are already giving more than $ 10,600 for one cryptonomete.

We have already noted that now the Bitcoin exchange rate is growing mainly because of speculative demand. At the same time, the offer is limited by the nature of the crypto currency - in total no more than 21 million coins can be produced. It is expected that they will all be mined by 2040, but how much will be completely removed from circulation by that time? Last week, the analytical company Chainalysis, which is studying the blockbuster network, Bitcoin, published an entertaining study. Its results indicate that already now from 2.78 million to 3.79 million bitcoins have been lost forever due to various circumstances. In the spring of this year, Australian journalist Gizmodo Campbell Simpson told how he accidentally moved to the dump hard drive where he stored a file with 1400 bitcoins. How much they cost now you can count yourself. Now one more such story emerged. It tells the resource The Guardian.

In 2013, a resident of the city of Newport in Wales, James Howells accidentally threw a hard drive from a broken laptop, which was stored 7,5 thousand bitcoins. At that time, the value of the crypto currency was about $ 1242. That is, Howells had $ 9.3 million. Taking into account the current rate, it is already about $ 80 million. As Howells recalls, he discarded the disk in mid-June-early August, but realized the mistake only in November and immediately rushed to a local landfill on search for a lost state.
"I talked with one of the local workers, explained the situation. He took me to the dump on which he worked. In size it is almost like a football field and in three months it has increased by almost a meter in height ", - quotes Howells as The Guardian.

In a conversation with TJ Howells said that the disk is still lying on the landfill, at least he is sure of it, but to get it you need a special permission from the local authorities. And with his receipt, Howells had a problem. Authorities claim that the search operation will cost "millions of pounds." In addition, the chances of success are very low. In addition, it is possible that the disk is damaged so much that it will not be possible to extract the data. But Howells is more optimistic and can be understood, there is not always a chance to take $ 80 million from the dump.

"I still hope to get permission. The problem is in the environment - in the UK, landfills have not been torn up before. To start looking for a disk, you'll have to clean up some garbage barriers. It's not just digging a hole in the ground, it needs to be done carefully, using the necessary equipment and cleaning devices. [...] For four years, a lot of garbage has accumulated in the dump, "says Howells.

Howells has been dealing with crypto-currencies since 2009. Now it practically does not work, but deals with bitcoins and invests in other crypto-currencies. In his opinion, Bitcoin Cash - the new crypto currency, formed as a result of the recent division of bitcoin - should be considered a real bitcoin.
Friends of STEEMIT 😊 how do you think he will find his HDD? 🤔

Sort:

I wiped a hdd with a litecoin wallet a few years ago. Didn't bother to take care really well because it was just an experiment back then.

God, only if I could get that wallet back now.

Yes, but how to do it? 🤔

I cannot even imagine how it must feel to realize that this is gone, forever. Back when bitcoin was only $2, a friend had actual metal coins made, with wallet addresses and would hand them out as souvenirs... can you imagine to have a few of these today? Back then... it was nothing.

For me it is generally a shock, we in Ukraine have only recently started talking about bitcoins, we did not even know what it was
