I just read this news about how a Ukrainian hacker group stole more than $50 million in bitcoin by running some AdWords campaigns Here. According to the news, hackers created some phishing website for popular bitcoin wallets, then run AdWords campaigns on popular cryptocurrency(bitcoin) related keywords misleading innocent visitors who have searched for those keywords to their malicious websites which were mirrored with actual websites.

I don't want to copy and paste all the content here. So please refer the Original Source: http://blog.talosintelligence.com/2018/02/coinhoarder.html for more detailed information.

Cisco has been tracking a bitcoin theft campaign for over 6 months. The campaign was discovered internally and researched with the aid of an intelligence sharing partnership with Ukraine Cyberpolice. The campaign was very simple and after initial setup, the attackers needed only to continue purchasing Google AdWords to ensure a steady stream of victims. This campaign targeted specific geographic regions and allowed the attackers to amass millions in revenue through the theft of cryptocurrency from victims. This campaign demonstrates just how lucrative these sorts of malicious attacks can be for cybercriminals. Additionally, the revenue generated by these sorts of attacks, can then be reinvested into other cybercriminal operations.

Victims of any phishing are people who are new to internet or computer technology.. or are pure idiots who can't read their internet browser's address bar.. as far as I know operating Bitcoin or running a Bitcoin wallet needs a little bit experience with using Internet.. What I mean to say is that my Mother can easily use Instagram and can open an email account or do phone verification on her own.. but before she would face trouble turning on a PC properly... so it would be a bit difficult for her to download a Bitcoin wallet from app store or Google play and setup a BTC wallet or deal with storing her private keys etc. without any assistance.. She is smart but she is from a generation who wrote her Master's thesis with pen and paper.. So basically people who owns Bitcoin are people with a bit of experience with internet or how the internet economy or monetary system works.. and I don't think such people are inexperienced enough with computers or internet to fall for something like Phishing? Even my 11 year old cousin won't fall for something as silly as phishing..

Exactly, that is why they have been targeting to the people of the specific region like asia where people has less knowledge about bitcoin and the things. thanks for our dropping by here. :)

I think there are too many wallets and transactions without authentication security. Hence crypto space is generally an easy target for hackers. Thanks for the info!
