Bitcoin - Did Blockstream just change the game?
Bitcoin may not even need the internet in the future.
In news out yesterday, Blockstream reported that they had leased a 5th satellite from which to broadcast the bitcoin network.
That means that people could interact with the bitcoin network without the need of an internet connection.
The coverage had already been available across Africa, Europe, South and North America.
Now, this latest satellite will include the Asia Pacific region.
Is this a game changer?
I am going to say yes!
One of the potential weaknesses of bitcoin was a reliance on the internet to transact.
That wasn't a weakness everywhere but it was a weakness in some places, especially if you are in an emerging market or some place with restricted internet access.
If we can remove the internet as a necessity for using the bitcoin network, it will remove one of bitcoin's barriers to more widespread adoption.

If you ignore the price, 2018 has been a pretty big year for bitcoin.
I am expecting the price to start to reflect that in 2019 and 2020.

I can only say that besides the bear market scaring everybody, as you mentioned "Bitcoin is more than just the price", a lot of good things are being developed all over the crypto space. And some, just like this news are already solving major problems...
Yep I agree. If you took out the price and looked at all the other news/developments, most would say 2018 was a banner year for bitcoin.
Indeed, and that can only mean one thing, we won't be staying down for long. At some point it time the consistent development and emerge of so many good news will force the markets to go up to a fair price.
2018 was a year of great advancement in the bitcoin infrastructure while the price plummeted at the same time. All good news was constantly met with price retreats. It has been hard to understand how this was even possible but seein' is belivin'. Here's hopin' 2019 brings the breakthrough! Thanks for the update.
There were many that have said the move to $20k was manipulated, and I have to believe this sell off was manipulated as well. Everyone with stake in the game will do everything in their power to make their bets successful.
I think its a gamechanger. I would like to have my own sat and node but it s got to be easier.
Yep, agreed. It is especially important for emerging markets and those with strict controls on their internet.

When do we get good old Elon to dend out a few satellites for the crypto community. I'm sure we can make it happen.

So many developments... the crypto train keeps plowing forward without looking twice at price action. 2019 is gonna be a crazy year.
I think end of 2019 will be the start of the next major move. I am thinking mostly sideways till then.

Yeah to have a global Satellite network to access blockchain is a revolution by itself. Than everybody on the planet could potentialy transact on the Bitcoin Network.
I think Bitshares has something similar coming up but I forgot the name of the project...

This is the 5th satellite they have leased for this purpose, so it has been a process going on for some time.

This would be great for sure as many regions struggle for the access that is also sometimes too expensive. Crypto has always been a means to get those that are currently unbanked access to a financial system and this could be a step in that direction for almost 2 billion people worldwide.
