Massive $50 Million Bitcoin Phishing Scam Uncovered By Cisco

Cisco’s Talos cyber-security team claims to have unearthed a massive cryptocurrency-related phishing scam that targeted users of popular online digital wallet, Blockchain.info.

The $50 million scam was allegedly the handiwork of a Ukrainian cyber-criminal group called 'Coinhoarder', and was discovered in February 2017, when researchers at Talos noticed that phony sites were attracting “over 200,000 client queries” per hour.

According to Talos, Google AdWords was tricked into displaying ads that contained “gateway phishing links … that would redirect to a lander page (when clicked on) and serve phishing content in the native language of the geographic region of the victim’s IP address”.

The cyber-criminals used domain names like, ‘blockchien[.]info’ or ‘block-clain[.]info’ that closely resemble the name of the genuine website, but were allegedly set up by Coinhoarder to trick innocent users.
