Hackers Steal $70 Million Worth of Bitcoin

Hackers have stolen more than $70 million worth of Bitcoin from cryptocurrency mining site NiceHash, a company that mines bitcoins on behalf of customers, said it is investigating a breach that may have resulted in the theft of about $70 million worth of bitcoin.

“Yesterday morning at about 1 a.m., a hacker or a group of hackers was able to infiltrate our systems through a compromised company computer,” NiceHash CEO Marko Kobal announced in a video statement Thursday.

Research company Coindesk said that a wallet address referred to by NiceHash users indicates that about 4,700 bitcoins had been stolen. NiceHash said it will stop operating for 24 hours while it verifies how many bitcoins were taken. Wallet is a nickname for an online account.

The price of Bitcoins is constantly fluctuating, but as of Friday afternoon in the Asian market, the stolen haul is worth approximately $75 million.

NiceHash initially announced that it would shut down for 24 hours because of the security breach, but the company later tweeted that “[the shutdown] might take longer than expected.”

In a statement released on reddit, NiceHash wrote that “While the full scope of what happened is not yet known, we recommend, as a precaution, that you change your online passwords.”
