Hardware wallets or cold storage?

Why do people use hardware wallets when cold storage works perfectly well?

Does anybody have stats on how many hardware wallets are in use?

Seriously, not to sound like a Luddite or something but I don't see any point in buying any specialized hardware.

What do you think?
