They are symbols of the past. They will have been told what bitcoin is in very general terms by an adviser trying to milk them of money but won't have any concept of blockchain or it's uses outside of currency. As you said, they won't be able to get their heads round the concept of no middleman guaranteeing transactions and taking a slice of the action!
