Trader's 7BTC stolen on Bittrex!

in #bitcoin7 years ago (edited)

I read an article on news.bitcoin.com about a trader on bittrex who stored 11 BTC and apparently watched 7BTC being stolen from his account! He shared his account with a friend who helped him trade etc.. What happen was he woke up, logged into bittrex and started to see his Bitcoins being sold and withdrawn to an unidentified address!..he recorded the 'heist' as it happened by 'malicious bots created to steal digital assets'.

Bittrex informed the 'trader':
“Checking your account history we can see however that these sales are happening through API calls”

Now what makes this even worst is the fact that the 'trader' proir to this, made youtube video tutorials showing his bittrex API keys! doh!..well with that kind of infomation and the 'know how' your account will be hacked.
He says:
“So it seems somehow my API keys were stolen. Now, this could have quite possibly been my fault as I have used API keys in video tutorials before and may have somehow deleted the wrong ones and not double checked before I uploaded the video,”

I feel for the guy BUT what was he thinking leaving a large amount of cryptocurrency on an exchange! I've only been into crypto a few weeks and from the research I have done every seasoned crypto girl or guy emphasize NEVER storing large amounts of crypto earnings on any exchange ! And also NEVER reveal your keys - private or otherwise!

Not sure if I fully belive this article (some holes in it) but the lesson here is NEVER leave 11 BTC's on an exchage! And don't do tutorial showing your API keys!!
