Coinhive is a website that provides website owners with javascript codes to embed in their websites that allow them to take their sites visitors CPU and use it to mine cryptocurrencies for their own profit and gain. Doing this sucks up valuable CPU from the website visitor, slowing down their machine and computing power immensely.

Recently, Coinhive was hacked and attackers replaced the javascript code with their own malicious code. Some would call this karma, but the point still remains that site owners are stealing CPU to mine cryptos.

Thankfully, there are some ways to combat this!

Antivirus

Some Antivirus products, including Malwarebytes and Kaspersky, have started blocking the Coinhive script to prevent their customers and users from unauthorised mining and extensive CPU usage.

It is recommended you check to make sure that your antivirus is able to determine if your CPU is being used for crypto mining (unless you want it to).

No Coin

No Coin is a Google Chrome plug-in which you can install. This plug in detects and prevents any and all unauthorized CPU mining. No Coin is one of a handful of plug-ins that are open source and allow this feature.

minerBlock

minerBlock is another plug-in available on Google Chrome which prevents the mining of cryptocurrencies using your CPU for another party.

As cryptocurrencies gain hype and momentum, it's no doubt that more and more sites will try to use their users valuable (and free) CPU to currencies for their monetary gain. Staying up to date on the latest plug-ins, patches, and anti-virus software updates will help you stay ahead of the game stay safe. Unfortunately (to my knowledge), there's no set place to identify specific sites of performing these activities, so having strong defenses is still the best recommended protection. If you are semi-tech savvy, you can also view the current active processes your computer is running and kill them with commands.

If you have any additional information or tips to combat CPU mining and stay safe, please post and share them below! I hope this has been informative and helpful. Please share with everyone and re-steem!

Stay safe!

Thanks!! Glad to help :)

Im feel like such a retard , I use faucets occasionally and there all full of malware these days , specially moonbitcoin, have to reboot my PC after I visit that site

Thanks for posing this...it helps a great deal. I will have to search around and see if there are any for Firefox too.

Never thought to use plugins to assist in the prevention of that script but it makes sense.

Thanks again.

Thanks! I'm sure that if there aren't plug-ins for Firefox yet that there will be soon! I would imagine though that there would be.
