The complexity of bitcoin is not a hopeless problem

When you use the electricity grid, you take a plug and shove it into the outlet and expect everything to work. If we ever showed to the masses the complexity behind the outlet, i.e. how electricity production and distribution really works, they would cry foul, and vehemently argue that this "complex electricity system" is absolutely unusable. People only agree to use electricity because they are prevented from looking under the hood and watching the incredibly elaborate contraptions required to make it work.

Another example is the mobile phone. The consumers had been complaining for at least three decades about how unusable computers really were. They were considered to be utterly detestable devices solely meant to confuse the soul of the hapless user. The first part of the solution was to make sure that the plastic cover is totally opaque. The user must not be allowed to see what is inside. Secondly, it was still needed to allow a screen into it, but this screen would only present utterly simple icons. Mobile phones are computers. The only reason why the consumer agrees to use them, is because he is kept in the dark about that fact.

We have not had thirty years already to hide the complexity of the bitcoin network. We may not even need that much time to finally hide it behind some utterly dumb user interface. Everybody involved knows that it needs to be done. Everybody also knows that it is really hard to discover the insightful trick that will fool the user into believing that the thing in front of his eyes is just an utterly simple gadget. We are working on it. Do not be discouraged by disparaging user remarks about the impossible complexity of bitcoin. The insight required to solve this problem will eventually get discovered. It always does.
