ANONYMOUS DEVELOPERS PROMOTE POTENTIAL SCAM WITH SEGWIT2X MASK
Since December 16th, a group of developers has announced and disseminated their intentions to relive the SegWit2X bifurcation project. The alleged event will take place at the height of Bitcoin's 501451 block, which is expected to be reached this December 28th.
This possible bifurcation raises many suspicions, as they try to put in operation a network that was failed and forgotten. On this occasion it does not have any known promoter of the ecosystem and most of its diffusion by the press has been paid advertisements.
SegWit2X was a network scalability proposal promoted mainly by a group of miners and some CEOs of companies linked to Bitcoin. This proposal was recently cancelled by the same people who promoted the project when they saw that both developers and a large part of the bitcoiner community rejected the project's objectives.
Although it was cancelled, last November 17 a group of unknown developers called BitPico tried to launch the bifurcation, without any success, since it did not even generate a block in the network. There was also no consensus on its implementation, so that it did not manage to launch at the technical level.
Now another group is trying to revive this failed proposal. The announcement was made by Bitcointalk on December 16th. According to its website, the team is led by three people totally unknown to the community, whose Linkedin profiles do not exist or are incomplete.
Another aspect that raises suspicions is that they have invested heavily in paid press advertisements to be promoted in the specialized media and publicized, because it is a proposal with very little support in the bitcoiner community.
The Bitcoin network is based on open source, so anyone can create a branch of it. It is now important to be quite careful with these bifurcations that offer free cryptoactives in exchange for holding funds in one of their applications. Cases have been reported of bitcoin theft from malicious portfolios offering to reclaim their Bitcoin Gold. Reports were also recently reported about Bitcoin Diamond, another of the network branches announced for this month.
This new attempt to revive a proposal that has shown many flaws, sounds the alerts. It is important that any bitcoiner interested in this proposal be very careful with their funding and do the dedicated research before using any software released by this group of unknown developers in the ecosystem.
Be patient. Wait it out and see if Trezor splits it for us. Never rush into something like this and never give a 3rd party your private key.
