$67 Millions Worth Of Bitcoin Vanished In NiceHash Mining Market Hack

in #bitcoin7 years ago

Although we're seeing historical highs for Bitcoin price, this doesn't mean that all in the crypto world is nice (pun intended). According to a statement from NiceHash, the mining market website, the security of the site has been compromised and, as a result, Bitcoin wallets were emptied.

Importantly, our payment system was compromised and the contents of the NiceHash Bitcoin wallet have been stolen. We are working to verify the precise number of BTC taken.
Clearly, this is a matter of deep concern and we are working hard to rectify the matter in the coming days. In addition to undertaking our own investigation, the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and law enforcement and we are co-operating with them as a matter of urgency.
We are fully committed to restoring the NiceHash service with the highest security measures at the earliest opportunity.

According to comments on the above reddit thread, the amount of stolen BTC would be around $67 millions, at the current market prices.

what was NiceHash about ? I wasn't using it.. something similar to HashFlare or Genesis Mining or different kind of business ?

something similar to HashFlare or Genesis Mining

yes

I thought Nicehash was a self -mining service. It would detect your mining specs and then determine the most profitable coin to mine and start mining it and then pay the user in BTC.

Isn't Genesis Cloud Mining?

Genesis is about Cloud Mining Contracts, yes. I might be confusing NiceHash with something like MinerGate, but you're right just found something saying you can connect your rig to NiceHash ...

Yeah minergate is probably what you were thinking of.

This will calm down btc a bit and I expect a downward trend. @acidyo just wrote about how Steemit wallet is way more secure and better than other cryptos. Steem is hard to hack if properly secured. The only Steem in danger of loss is that on exchanges.

Can the Bitcoin address be blocked from transactions in any way as we already know the address?

Nope. You can only monitor it and see where the funds are flowing from it.

Could this be another Mt Gox, perhaps but only such news can stop the wild speculation of the bitcoin price.

mannn wtf my NiceHash miner crashed is that the reason why it crashed??? my hard earned money all gone i had around 120000 satoshi all gone

sorry to hear this :(

nvm leave it i spend 2 week into colllecting it and all i got was 20$ at least my pc wll get little rest thank god

I'm not saying it's an inside job, but walking off with a cool 60 million, throwing it in the stock market and retiring off 6% minimum gains a year doesn't sound too bad.

If you just lived off a 6% interest off that amount it would be $3.6 million per year. Better than trying to make that over the course of your lifetime running the website.

yes.. it smells like intended behaviour for me as well.. the good part if they did it is that you would never know..

the good part if they did it is that you would never know..

Exactly

@dragosroua I am glad I have no interest in the mining end of the cryptos. Just buy the coins I like and HODL......................
