Why Steemit

I was told this is a terrific platform for content creators. Big hype of "make better money then youtube" "Y'all better be on steemit that is where the future is" I see people on here but I really do not see what this has to offer? Are these guys pumping this platform as they are developers in this or is a legit community in here and people are here to learn and enjoy each other and share life together? Please someone help me understand this Steemit thing.
