When the stampede panic starts out of the fiat currencies, stock market, and the bond market, investors will flee into crypto currencies and precious metals. The government will want to stop this. How will this happen? Here's a list of what they may do:
Impose high taxes for each transaction or on capital gains of crypto currencies to discourage ownership of crypto currencies. Or make it illegal to own crypto currencies entirerly.
Close down crypto exchanges. This will scare crypto currencies into friendly countries. The government will then impose sanctions on those countries which does not cooperate with them.
Force users by law to convert private crypto currencies into government owned and controlled crypto currencies. They might offer government crypto currencies backed with federal land, petrol oil, or tax breaks to encourage conversion into their crypto currency.
Goverment sponsored hackers attack crypto exchanges to scare people away from them.
Pull the internet kill switch and offer a new internet system which is controlled by the government totally.
The war on crypto currencies is beginning to heat up by government and the central bankers. Depending on how desparate they get the more extreme the measures they will take. Be prepared for action by them and plan your counter actions.

Depends where you live and it will be quite hard for them to ban crypto. Out of all the possible options, the killswitch seems most likely and that day will be madness.
Everybody thinks there is going to be a big war between banks and bitcoin, but i don't think so. They can print an infinite amount of money, and long before it gets to be a problem they will have bought up all the Bitcoin already, in order to control it's markets... they're not going anywhere.. Bitcoin won't bring freedom, it will bring complete ensnarement as all your spending actions will be completely visible and traceable.
They can try. But there is a financial revolution happening, and they will never be able to stop it. The people will always find a way!! :)
