Making that referral money, some people would frown down upon that, and yet they are not the ones making the money. Referrals are only bad when they have tiered or hierarchical payouts associated. from an etiquette perspective if you are not friends with the person you are giving the referral to, then it is no longer a referral its a sales commission and your cold canvasing people.
