Looking for a way to keep your crypto close to you? It doesn’t get any closer than an implanted NFC chip.

This has got to be one of the coolest developments in the space: implantable chips that are injected under the skin and that can be used to store private keys.

There are a growing number of companies that specialise in biohacking: altering the human body in various ways to augment or improve it. Implantable chips are popular and have been used for a wide variety of purposes. The chips are RFID/NFC, which means they can be read by a device close by. Chips are typically implanted in the hand. Dangerous Things is one US company that deals in them (

. Alternatively, some companies will charge more for a brief appointment where they will inject the chip. Aftercare is minimal.

A couple of warnings. Firstly, don’t store large amounts of crypto in your body. That’s a bad idea because if someone decides they want it, there are only a handful of ways they can get it and few are pleasant. Secondly, keep it cold: you want to make sure it’s accessible via an NFC reader, but ideally the keys are not plaintext. You might want to store a wallet address and a key protected by a password, for example. Lastly, this is probably not something you want to tell your parents about.
