Bill Gates says cryptocurrencies cause death

in #bitcoin6 years ago

Crypto-currencies kill people in a "pretty direct" way, said Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

He was referring to how digital currencies like Bitcoin are used to buy drugs like synthetic opioid fentanyl.

In a "Ask Me Anything" session on the Reddit news site, he said that the anonymity of digital currencies meant that they were related to terrorist financing and money laundering.

Some criticized him saying he was ill-informed about technology.

Asked by a user for his opinion on technology, Mr. Gates replied: "The main characteristic of cryptocurrencies is their anonymity, which is not a good thing, the government's ability to detect money laundering Tax evasion and terrorism Funding is a good thing.

"Crypto-currencies are currently used to buy fentanyl and other drugs, so the speculative wave around ICOs and cryptocurrencies is very risky. for those who go there a long time. "
The veteran investor Warren Buffet has already said that the speculative craze for cryptocurrency "will come to a bad end".
His lukewarm response to Reddit did not go well with everyone who participated in the debate, with some blaming him for what they thought was an attempt to influence the market. Others suggested he should look again at the Bitcoin White Paper.

Charitable donations
In Reddit's broad speech, Gates told the audience that his three main goals were to "reduce both child mortality and malnutrition and stop polio."

Mr. Gates is co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which spends billions each year on education and health projects.

The foundation has also sponsored the development of blockchain - the technology that underpins crypto-currenices - for traders in Kenya.

Microsoft is also looking to integrate blockchain technology to verify digital identity.

The rise in the value of cryptocurrency has prompted governments around the world to look more closely at its impact on economies and citizens.

Although the technology behind it is often praised, there is concern about how it could disrupt the economy and its links to cybercrime and money laundering.

The UK Treasury Committee is currently studying the impact of these currencies.
