With the rising concern over food safety, traceability of the food product and food production system has emerged as a necessity. In the present era of continuous growth in global food business, success of an enterprise is highly dependent on competitive strategies adopted. It can be the strategy of following current economic trends, improving competitive positions in the market or may be adaptation of technological advancement.

While going truly global with supply chain management, a company may develop product in the USA, produce in India and sale in Europe In this scenario, the traditional operation management & logistical activities are facing radical changes. This change in trade and the modernization of transport infrastructures have elevated the importance of work/ process/ product flow management to new levels.

Manufacturers and researchers have noticed many problems in relation to complexity of supply chain activities. It is difficult to identify the problem zone in a long supply chain which includes a large number of stakeholders. Therefore quality and safety of food has got compromised to an extensive level in many occasions.

As a result a number of food crises, food borne disease outbreaks, and food recall and food safety issues occurred during the last couple of decades and the credibility of the food industry was heavily challenged. These necessitate stringent laws, policies and standards regarding food safety and quality management.

The strict regulation of food safety has been developed for the food industry and traceability was found as a tool to meet the food safety and quality requirements. Traceability is in one hand providing ease in doing business on the other hand providing measure to trace down the operation.

Tracing a product from the origin to final user is of utter importance and it is of more concern when it is a food product. With the rising concern of gaining customers’ faith on food, tracing a food from production of raw materials to finally in the dining table and proving customer proper information about a food’s life cycle has become customary and necessary. This change in mindset made information a new form of business capital. Business houses are, thereby, investing a large chunk of their capital in developing a robust traceability system for their business.

But a few implementation hurdles has been found for implementation of traceability system as the success lies on accurate collection, documentation, maintenance and application of information. The manufacturers found this documentation part truly complex as it needs proper maintenance of database.

Moreover they found the system very slow during investigation of food related crisis. Even the modernization of traditional traceability system by introducing Global Food Traceability, which was a concept of centralized information system, didn’t help much as it was a monopolistic information system, which may raise trust problem. Thus the concept of using blockchain technology in traceability is rising.

Blockchain is a digital platform that keeps the whole history of all transactions between users across the network in a tamper- and revision-roof manner. This removes need of a central authority and consequently leads to confidence of participants in the integrity of any single entity and hence, enhanced transparency and trust. It helps transparency and easy monitoring of the goods flow in the chain, quickly finding the source when dealing with contaminated food, thereby help to produce safe food (Bertolini et al., 2006; Beulens et al., 2005; Regattieri et al., 2007; Trienekens & Zuurbier, 2008).

Three major points are identified, based on which, innovative idea generated to manage the supply chain efficiently to satisfy the modern consumers as well as business stockholders.

  1. Struggle for supply chain stakeholders to maintain an adequate overview of their networks: Resulting low standard of production, handling, distribution, and inefficient logistics operations and thereby generating low quality of raw materials/food/drinks/service and high probability of contamination, food borne diseases and food recall.

  2. Highly complex chains with higher numbers of actors: Complexity reduces transparency thereby increasing opportunities for fraud, negligence, or other threats.

  3. End consumers are demanding ever-higher levels of transparency about the origins of their products: The modern consumers are highly concerned about safety and content of the food they consume. It became mandatory to maintain a transparent food supply chain in order to build customers’ confidence on the product (Triene kens et al., 2012, Beulens, et al., 2005).

A number of blockchain based traceability platform generated in last couple of years with ‘TRUST based solutions’ for the supply chain.

A number of whitepapers (like Ambrosus, TE-FOOD, and ECOS whitepapers) has been published in last couple of years.
We at CIBUS are trying to differentiate them as per their category for more understandable view and knowledge.

CIBUS is a bit different than all other similar projects going on!!!!

WHO ARE WE?

The CIBUS network is a blockchain-based ecosystem on food and health supplements to ensure the origin, quality and transparency. Its farm to fork traceability systems help to minimize the production and distribution of unsafe or poor quality products, thereby minimize the potential for bad publicity, liability, and costly product recalls. It is a platform is to bring food and dietary supplements manufacturers, producers, sellers or traders under one functional, interactive, and mutually profitable platform based on blockchain technology and enabling a transparency via trustworthy data sitting on distributed ledger which can be freely accessed by all.

Now, apart from being a blockchain based traceability system, it is an e-commerce platform that empowers both B2C and B2B trade modality in food and dietary supplements related merchandise using CIBUS-Retail and CIBUS-Trade sub-platforms, respectively. CIBUS AD is a direct advertising and marketing platform facilitates direct marketing. CIBUS token will be the currency of trade across all the platforms. CIBUS escrow is a financial intermediary arrangement where CIBUS will hold and release payments to buyers and sellers involved in a given transaction. It helps in processing transactions more protected and secured way by keeping the payment in a secure escrow account. CIBUS will work as an intermediary between buyers and sellers and all transactions will be facilitated by CIBUS Token. In near future, CIBUS may consider to open its own Logistics centre to deliver products to its customers from its central warehouse.

Moreover, CIBUS is introducing best quality, advanced and intuitive sensors that can continually monitor and steadily send data to the blockchain as an item transits from manufacturer to its end user.

SO, HOW DO WE STAND APART?

There is some exclusivity that makes CIBUS different from others. Being a public blockchain system it comes under the same genre as others but its multifunctional platform makes is different from others. The unique technical features make it a next generation e-commerce platform based on blockchain. Let’s take a look.

Along with powerful blockchain based traceability system CIBUS is offering a global online marketplace where practically anyone can trade in a trustworthy and transparent environment. CIBUS is a two way solution of both e-commerce platform and traceability network. It is an e-commerce platform that empowers both B2C and B2B trade modality in food and dietary supplements related merchandise using CIBUS-Retail and CIBUS-Trade sub-platforms, respectively.
Advantages:

Direct sales to end consumer excluding middlemen.

Platform uses embedded smart contracts to conduct all transactions.

An interactive price comparison screen that compares the price of all available alternatives for a given product from different websites.

One click automated purchase strategy screen that shows the cheapest, nearest product based on the location preference set by the customer.

Customers can set location preference to buy products from local, national or global sellers.

Product list to show other “connected” users who have purchased the product in the past.

Products with lower ratings will be displayed at the very bottom of the product list- automatic relegation to help users make better choices.

Seller info on the product list will display the information disclosure level attainted by the seller on CIBUS-Trace. Higher the level, better the disclosure standard.

Option to read past user reviews in all major world languages.

Integrates past user reviews on the product from CIBUS-Social.

As like other platforms, CIBUS Token is the virtual currency exchange system in this system. The best features of CIBUS token in this platform are that, it will not only bring a transparency in transaction process but also introduce customer’s protection, loyalty and rewards.
Advantages:

Five stage escrow service options provided for every transaction, irrespective of transaction size.

Virtual currency exchange counter that converts any other cryptocurrency to CIBUS tokens for maintaining minimum wallet balance for transaction.

Lowest possible transaction fee computed based on individual transaction value.

Highest protection of customer details to prevent direct spamming from the seller is ensured.

Food traceability and blockchain leveraging pull model — the CIBUS way

Push model: The tracking of food life cycle which starts from Manufacturer and ends with Consumer. Most of the platform follows PULL model which starts from customer and ends with manufacturer. Pull model defines the exact opposite flow of Push model.

So, the major difference is; CIBUS application will not take part to store the traceable information at each stage of lifecycle of the food. Rather we will demand the information from manufacturer to provide traceable information and Blockchain will store the information as much as the manufacturer provides.

Advantages:

Complete quality assurance which stats from the beginning of the supply chain.

It will begin trust among the stakeholders as each of them will be responsible for delivering data to the blockchain system.

Quick and accurate traceability in case of any accident in the supply chain which means the particular product can be recalled right from the supply chain, before going to the market. It will definitely help to stop the chances of food borne diseases, food recall and other food related accidents.

Introduce trust between manufacturer and consumer for delivering honest product.

Transnational data and the parameters specified between the business parties will be recorded at each stage of the life cycle.

Recording medium can be underlying Blockchain Network.

Here consumer will demand the information regarding the product; and the product business network will provide the data.

Provided data will be stored in Blockchain network and will be supplied to customer on demand.
