Global Warming and Mining

in #bitcoin7 years ago

History has already shown that the amount of electricity used, and heat produced from mining has increased dramatically. The days of mining on your alienware PC are over. Today we see warehouses full of equipment dedicated to mining bitcoin and altcoins. What will tomorrow bring?

If cryptocurrency is scaled up, will the technology be able to evolve fast enough or will we be seeing entire city blocks dedicated to mining cryptocurrency? Would it be crazy to think that the amount of heat caused by mining/cooling rigs could be enough to impact global warming at a much faster rate than we have seen in the past? The required electricity needed is only going to continue to increase, especially with actual world-wide adoption (when-your-grandmother-sends-you-bitcoin-for-your-birthday-because-its-so-easy level of adoption). The automobile, industrial pollution, and other things, have taken years to scale to a level where global temperatures are clearly impacted by their presence. I for one do believe that humans/machines have had a significant impact, and in the next few years, it could be humans/processors that contribute to "heat pollution" the most (especially if electric cars take off exponentially as their costs lower). In only a few years, the crypto-industry and the required tech to mine has grown exponentially, and it is still hardly scratching the surface of usability, scaling, innovation, and adoption.

Im curious to hear what peoples thoughts are on the future of the crypto space, mining and electricity, and by future I mean 10, 20, 30+ years from now.

Just a thought that keeps me up -> Not a single person on earth today, will be alive when the mining stops and all the coins are produced. Anyone mining at that point is going to be second or third generation cryptocurrency users.

I would love to see people coming up with good sollutions to these worries. We could work with solar energy and re-use the heat produced by these mining rigs to warm up office buildings or something like that. I think these things are already happening with some server spaces. I'm sure this could help avoid the extra strain on global warming. I just hope these technologies will be put to use and will become the norm.
