Entering the World of Bitcoin

So you want to learn about Bitcoin but you don't know how?

Understandably, approaching Bitcoin can be hard for many people. In this article, I’ll walk you through the various approaches to entering the world of cryptocurrency via Bitcoin.

  I’m a hands-on learner.

 Alright, how hands-on?

I'm really hands-on! Let's throw some money at it.

Buy Bitcoin via Coinbase.

Buy Bitcoin via LocalBitcoins.

Buy Bitcoin via a local Bitcoin ATM.

I'm hands-on, but I'm not ready to jump in yet.

Run a node (free download).

Install a ticker widget on your homescreen of your phone.

I like to do my research.

I like to do my research, but I don't feel like reading.

Watch a 9 minute video of an overview of the basics.

Watch a 22 minute video explaining the technical details of Bitcoin.

I don't mind reading or looking over data.

Read Coindesk's article explaining it as if you were five years old.

Read a Wall Street Veteran's lengthy take on why Bitcoin is important.

I'm still skeptical...

It would be irresponsible if I were to tell you there is no risk in Bitcoin. In this section, I'll cover the common fears among new users.

What if the price goes down?

This is a valid fear but if you look at the all-time graph for the price of Bitcoin in USD the trend is a positive one. "Hey! Wait a minute the price crashed in the past," you say. Yes, you are right; the price has crashed in the past. However, that was years ago and Bitcoin has matured over time.

For example, the price spike and subsequent fall  in 2013-2014 took place over an extremely quick time period and was caused by unrestrained Chinese buying. The finance sector of China saw the opportunity of an unregulated Bitcoin and started rapidly buying it up. The Chinese government then temporarily banned Bitcoin which contributed to the price crash. Fast forward to December 2016, Bitcoin again starts to surge towards $1000 and the Chinese are trading like mad. However, this time around the Chinese government chose to impose regulations. That is progress and a perfect example of how cryptocurrency is maturing every day.

The key to Bitcoin sustaining its price is stable price growth. Slow and steady wins the race. Bitcoin is not a get rich quick scheme; it is a speculatory investment. I always figure as long as it makes more interest than the 2% interest of my checking account I'm in the clear.

What if I am hacked?

If you are concerned with the security of your own computer, consider buying Bitcoin via a service like Coinbase. Coinbase holds your Bitcoin in their secure and insured facilities. Although you sacrifice some freedoms that Bitcoin provides, you gain a peace of mind similar to your bank account.

If you choose to store Bitcoin on your own computer, it is only as safe as your computer is. Run virus protection, use a firewall, scan your computer once a week at least, and use secure passwords for everything. You can even store your Bitcoin keys on a flashdrive to further remove it from the possibility of hacking.

The most important thing you can do is to do your homework. Learn the benefits and risks of investing. Learn the benefits and risks to the technology. Don't buy into hype and remember everyone has a motive.
