in #bitcoin7 years ago

Tldr: BTC-e hacked MtGox.

This is getting more crazy witch each hour. You've probably heard about BTC-e shutting down, probably because of a hack. It turns out that most probably it wasn't hacked at all - it was an inside job!

News broke out today about arresting Alexander Vinnik - a Russian that is rumoured to be owner of the BTC-e exchange! He's been accused for money laundering - about $4 billion USD to be exact (!!!).

According to blog.wizsec.jp the money he laundred include Bitcoin stolen from MtGox in 2013.

It is a very possible assumption that Vinnik created BTC-e in order to sell the stolen MtGox Bitcoins.

Will we finally learn the truth about the MtGox biggest Bitcoins theft ever? Whole twitter is buzzing with speculation but having Vinnik arrested surely bring is closer to all the answers.

Stay tuned!

I doubt that BTC-E was created because of the MtGox hack. In my recollection, BTC-E was up and running before MtGox got hacked. But perhaps you mean a scenario whereby MtGox was hacked, but did not tell anyone, and subsequently BTC-E was set up.

Anyway, good work of authorities if mischief is brought to justice, but I fear for the regular BTC-E users who did nothing wrong. Will they pay the price?

We shall find out :)
