Recently, Hiromi Yamaoka, former head of payment and settlement systems control at the Japan Central Bank, said the Facebook Libra project has forced central banks to explore and consider creating their own central bank digital currencies (CBDC). China is currently in the race to develop the CBDC, but other countries appear to be trying to catch up.
In an official press release, the Bank of England said the central banks of Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, the European Union, Sweden and Switzerland have joined the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) to form a task force tasked with investigating CBDCs. This group will "evaluate the use of CBDC; economic, functional and technical design choices, including cross-border interoperability; and sharing knowledge of emerging technologies."
