It is actually very easy to hack manually generated pass phrases for Brain Wallets. Your friend should be aware of that. https://www.wired.com/2015/07/brainflayer-password-cracker-steals-bitcoins-brain/
However, if used with a set of 12 words randomly generated in combination with a SALT it will be super secure. He can do that by not using bitaddress.org but https://brainwallet.io/ instead.
