"WARNING" check your Airdrop wallet addresses NOW!

in #bitcoin7 years ago (edited)

Hi All

Have you been involved in the recent craze of Airdrops lately? Hmm did you have a look at the google spreed sheets that have been provided showing what number in the Airdrop you are, did you put your wallet address and a user/twitter or some other criteria to qualify. Now... did you double check what address you used?

When I went looking through these sheets I noticed something strange? There were incorrect wallet addresses entered into the spreed sheet. I knew what these were straight away. Jumping on to Myether I confirmed my thoughts.

"People have been pasting their secret key address into the spreed sheet" WTF looking further into https://ethplorer.io/ and yup. These accounts have been fleeced. Everything had been traded out straight away and quickly. These wallets are now compromised beyond control and will these opportunists will be frequented picking up all and any tokens dropped in them. Picture below is an example of a private key. You should NEVER give this key away.

This is the equivalent of driving your nice new Ferrari (your choice) with all of the transfer papers signed and keys in the ignition and then walking away. Sooner or later someone is going to take it. This is exactly what has happened and if you are one of these that it has happened to I do hope it hasn't hurt too much.

This is an example of the correct type of address an actual ETH wallet address (note: random pics off Internet wallet used)

Some key points to remember when joining a PUBLIC Airdrop.

  1. Is the google doc going to be made public?
  2. Only copy your receive or actual wallet address
  3. Double check you address first 3 and last 3 characters the same?
  4. Use an ERC20 compliant Google app instead
  5. Use a Ledger or Nano wallet that does not show the private key
  6. Always back up your key word and JSON files to a USB drive do not store on your computer (or back up to USB at least)

Is there anything you can do to get your stolen tokens back?
No not really, however I do have a few ideas and you may just get lucky?

  1. Check the address of who has stolen your tokens - https://etherscan.io/ or https://ethplorer.io/
  2. Check this wallet against every google doc Airdrop you can get your hands on
  3. See if this address comes and up, they may have a username or twitter etc... associated with this address?
  4. Check user is still active in this community?
  5. Contact management of site and explain situation for details to provide to Police?
  6. Contact Police with details?
  7. Or send them a message asking nicely to give them back (to anew address) or pester the Shit out of the User? your choice...

I am not sure if this will even work or even possible, but that is what I would do to start with in tracking them down. I reckon a few may have used that same Airdrop address as what they stole the tokens to?

If that is you and you are reading this then perhaps returning them may be the right thing. But not to the open wallet. If I could suggest you send the user a nice message asking for a new safe address to send them to as you have held them for safe keeping for them. If you believe in Karma then you may get some back.

Overall the Airdrops have been pretty good and I can see a lot of people have done well legitimately. So remember double check what details you are sending. Make sure your details are correct double even triple check first.

Hope this has helped some of you and stopped you from sending the wrong details, if you feel it has then please upvote and share this post. If you wish to add a donation that is welcomed also.

Everyone take care and check your addresses NOW!

I see the new Airdrops are getting people to double check their addresses and make sure they are not sending private keys. So kudos to them for improving the process.

Kudos to FUDD coin for updating their forms.
