Accustomed to records, the bitcoin now exceeds $ 5,000

From record to record. Bitcoin reached a new high on Thursday: the price of crypto-currency has surpassed $ 5,000 on the dedicated markets, settling in the morning at $ 5,183.97 (before going down somewhat).

With this new bout of fever, the most famous of the virtual currencies shows a breathtaking performance: since the beginning of the year, its course has multiplied by five. The bitcoin had already crossed the threshold of 4,000 dollars in July. In 2009, when the currency was created, it was worth only a few cents.

This sudden outbreak should give grain to its critics, who criticize precisely the volatility of crypto-money, as well as its opacity. Traditionally, fluctuations have been on the rise and fall, but there has been no massive reflux in recent months.

Speculative bubble ?

Faced with opponents who denounce the creation of a speculative bubble, its supporters praise for their part the idea that it can not be subjected to the temptation of the "money board".

Bitcoin, a peer-to-peer payment system based on so-called blockchain technology, is present on specific exchange platforms and not on regulated markets. It has no legal tender and is not governed by a central bank or government but by a large community of Internet users.

To be a recognized currency, it must, however, be accepted by all. And that is already the case. In a 2.0 currency market that weighs just over $ 130 billion, bitcoin accounts for about 47%, or $ 63.5 billion. It is the leading currency in front of other cryptographic currencies like the Ripple, or Litecoin.

The recent decision by Goldman Sachs to open a bitcoins trading office gave it a little more legitimacy.
