I attended the BitCoin Private Conference! Here's what I thought

in #bitcoin7 years ago (edited)

If you saw my two zaps you are already aware I went to the very First Official BitCoin Private Conference here in Austin, TX. I meant to write a post last night, but gave in to exhaustion from a long work week and fell asleep. Whoops!

Here was the big news they were waiting to reveal all night!

And here's a recording of the announcement and reaction:

That's right, February 28th, 2018! The snapshot date was set for only one month from the date of the announcement. And, the fork date was set for just two days later, March 2nd 2018! For anyone who's not aware of what this information means let me break it down.

Owners of BitCoin will receive one BitCoin Private for every one BitCoin they own.
Owners of ZClassic (ZCL) will receive one BitCoin Private for every one ZClassic they own.
Yes, you can own both currencies and you will receive BitCoin Private for both.

This is the FIRST time something like this has been attempted in the cryptocurrency world.

If you're looking to get into BitCoin Private (BTCP) you can buy one of the coins that are being forked, or you can mine it. Let's compare the prices:

As you can see buying ZCL is clearly the way to go if you're looking to get into BitCoin Private from the start.

If you're a miner, you can earn BTCP by mining ZCL and holding it for the snapshot. To earn even more BTCP there is an additional option. For an in depth post on this, please check out the information here. Essentially what your doing is giving the ZCL to the developers and you will receive back 1.25 times the amount you contributed. If you don't want to contribute your coins miners were asked to mine other coins for now in order to allow more coins to go to those who are contributing. Once they reach their targeted amount of 50,000 ZCL then miners will no longer be asked to contribute and the polite miners who switched can resume mining ZCL without hurting the project.

As for the presentations I won't spend too much time on. While it's clear the presenters put an effort into their speeches and slides it was also clear they are not professional speakers and were crunched on time. The topics covered a summary of how cryptocurrency works. Why privacy and privacy tokens are important. And the history of ZClassic.

The biggest thing mentioned that I haven't seen as much coverage on is that this will not be the end of ZClassic. The coin will continue to exist and developed by the community. Now what you think that will do to the price is up to your own judgement. I am not providing financial or investment advice.

If you've been following BitCoin Private you'll know it's been a fast and wild ride. All I can say is strap in and let's see where it goes.

Thank you for reading.

should i be concerned that my Zclassic is in the coinexchange.io website? Do we need to hold the private keys? will the exchanges credit the holders of zcl with btcp? those are my questions for the experts... thanks for the write-up...

Good questions that we don't have answers for yet. That's the main reason the fork date is so far in the future. The code is ready but they want to give Exchanges time to decide if they will list the coin and irregardless of listing the coin if they will provide the BTCP to their customers. For now we just have to wait and see. Worst case is you will need to move the coins to a wallet before the snapshot. I'm actually working on testing the wallet right now and will make a post if the test is successful.

yeah im fine with putting in the effort to send it to an official wallet, but i should get started figuring that out because a month will pass quick

If you're on CoinExchange, you'll likely want to move your coins to an official wallet. Check out zclassicpaperwallet.com or the ZCL Electrum Wallet on Github

Yes, it's clear the ZCL/BTCP team needs someone with decent PR, Rhett Creightons tweets also have the tendency to make investors a bit jittery. He has a weird choice of words.... like 'not giving up' when he means putting his heart and soul into the project and also yesterdays muddled tweet about snapshot times.

I'm excited for the project though. It is one of the more useful and relevant forks to happen.
