Surprises in the woods
As I am trying to organise my photo albuns, found these photos from a tryp to Hungary 2 years ago. I was supposed to stay in Budapest only, but altough being a beautiful city... nature is more my thing, so ended up staying a couple of days in Tihany, a small town near lake Balaton, that has a great number of awesome hiking trails nearby.
And to top a great day walking among nature... a new species was spotted! This bird doesn't exist where I live, and altough the photos are far from great, I consider myself really lucky to have seen in, let alone photograph it.
As I heard the noise and saw this cute head popping, tried to get closer... and was lucky enough to succeed!
These woodpeckers are pretty big, reaching almost 50 cm. And this one is a male; altough it's hard to see in the pictures, there is red on the entire crown (name given to the top of the head); the females only have red on the posterior part of it.
He stayed for a few more moments, then he flew away; but stayed long enough to make the day even better. Happiness is in the small things ;)
