A Snow Goose Day

in #birding6 years ago (edited)

Yesterday we saw Snow Geese Chen caerulescens on three separate occasions while birding in Pierce County. Previously I'd only seen this species once in 2018 in this county. Snow Geese are long distance migrants, and are passing through this area on their southward fall migration, and it appears that yesterday was a day they stopped off for a nutrition break in Pierce County. Note the bright white adults, and the grayer plumage with more black in the inner wing feathers on the juveniles. Snow Geese have black wing-tips, and a small percentage have a dark "bluish" plumage. These dark birds are known as the Blue Goose. See my earlier post https://steemit.com/birding/@birdbanter/october-pierce-county-big-day for more on this day of birding.
