Seumeulu Scops-Owl: endemic Species from Seumeulu Island
Otus umbra is endemic from Semeulue island, Aceh Province - Indonesia. This species favours forest edge and remnants, especially on coasts as well as clove plantations.The conservation actions is CITES Appendix II. Conduct research on the species as it remains very poorly studied. Determine is status and abudance and assess threats to the species.
The Aceh birder team was documenting this species on two last year. and forest destruction in the sundaic lowands of Sumatra-Indonesia has been very extensive, but very few data on this phenomenon are available from Seumulue. The tolerance of secondary and edge habitats shown by this species renders it unikely to be under immediate threat.
The Seumeulu Scops-Owl is listed as Near Thereatened because, although it is very poorly known, there are some indications that’s is very small range supports a moderately small, fragmented population, wich many be undergoing a continuing owing to forest degradation.
The global population size has not been quantified. But the species is described as rather frequent (Konig et al. 1990). The population is suspected to be stable in the absence for any declines or substantial threats. the proctect significant areas of sultable forest is one if consider conservation actions.
