in #biology6 years ago

Flowers, chocolates and romantic dinners by candlelight, all very common things at this time. Of course, we are talking about Valentine's Day, the day in which the execution of the priest Valentine is commemorated at the hads of the Roman Emperor Claudius II during the third century ... Yes, it is a sad but true story.

Returning to the topic, on this day people often make gifts to their partners or friends, it is said that "love is in the air". But what happens if I tell you that love runs through your veins? Let's see the following.

Oxytocin is a nine amino acid hormone (nonapeptide) that is produced in the brain, specifically in the hypothalamus and is released into the bloodstream by the neurohypophysis. It is very important because it regulates social and sexual behaviors and parental behavior.

Socially helps to increase confidence and reduce social fear as it inhibits certain areas of the brain related to fear, also reduces anxiety. A study found that in the case of people with eating disorders significantly reduces the obsession with the physical and the food they consume. In people with autism it was shown that its nasal or intravenous application allows them to understand and perform better in social situations.

Now, in terms of its evolutionary function in women is released mainly during pregnancy and breastfeeding as it will help to create a strong bond with the baby. On the other hand in men strengthens monogamy, allowing long-term relationships with a single sexual partner and also helps to relate to their children, making them more sensitive and loving.

Did you imagine that something as simple as a hormone played such an important role in our lives? Oh, wonders of evolution. See you in another post. Regards!

Saludos!
