#Plants: Aloe vera

Many plants have great importance in the pharmaceutical and cosmetological industry but without a doubt one of the most named in recent years is Aloe vera or "Sabila" as it is commonly known in Venezuela.

It is a succulent plant (OH YEAH), that is to say that they store water in their interior as many cacti do. Its name comes from the Greek "Alos" which means "salt" and "vera" which in Latin means "true".

It has a short stem up to 30 cm covered with thick leaves ranging from 40-50 x 5-8 cm, are grouped in the form of rose of up to 20 leaves. These are a grayish green color and may have clear spots, have teeth on the sides in the form of saw of about 2 mm. Its flowers appear in summer in a stem of up to 100 cm of altitude, these are yellow and hang like pendulums (they look like bananas).

Among its many medicinal properties it is used as antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and scarring, besides that it regulates the intestinal mucosa, improves stomach ulcers, decreases acidity, relieves constipation and strengthens the immune system. It has minerals such as calcium, copper, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc.

Muchas plantas poseen gran importancia en la industria farmaceutica y cosmetológica pero sin duda una de las mas nombradas en los últimos años es el Aloe vera o "Sábila" como se le conoce comunmente en Venezuela.

Se trata de una planta suculenta (OH SI), es decir que almacenan agua en su interior como lo hacen muchos cactus. Su nombre proviene del griego "Alos" que significa sal y "vera" que en latín signica "verdadero".

Posee un tallo corto de hasta 30 cm cubierto de hojas gruesas que van de 40-50 x 5-8 cm, están agrupadas en forma de rosa de hasta 20 hojas. Estas son de un color verde grisaceo y pueden tener motas claras, tienen dientes en los laterales en forma de sierra de unos 2 mm. Sus flores surgen en verano en un tallo de hasta 100 cm de altitud, estas son amarillas y cuelgan como pendulos (lucen como bananas).

Entre sus muchas propiedades medicinales se emplea como antiséptico, antiinflamatório y cicatrizánte, ademas de eso regula la mucosa intestinal, mejora ulceras estomacales, disminuye la acidez, alivia el estreñimiento y refuerza el sistema inmune. Posee minerales como calcio, cobre, potasio, magnesio, fósforo y zinc.
