Bill Gates has read what he and Warren Buffett agreed was the best business book ever written. Bill Gates concluded with, Today, over twenty years after Warren Buffett loaned me The Adventures of a Businessman--and over forty years since its initial publication--The Adventures of a Businessman remains the best business book I have read. We have all heard or read stories about Elon Musk or Bill Gates and their devotion to reading.
Bill Gates, Tony Elumelu, Warren Buffett, Strive Masiyiwa, Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey, just to name a few (not that many billionaires in the world, really), they all like to read books. Over the last year, I have been exploring the personal histories of a number of highly-admired business leaders, such as Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Mark Zuckerberg, in order to see how they applied principles of deliberate practice. Here are a few books top business leaders read repeatedly; books that profoundly affected their businesses and lives, and which they regularly re-read.
There are a lot of books out there talking about management and leadership, but only a handful of books make it into a list of essential readings for managers. If you are ready to kickstart your reading habits -- and your career -- take a look at these must-read books for improving your leadership skills this summer. If the usual is boring for you, perhaps it is time to read some really fresh ideas for leadership. In fact, I would go so far as to say that much of what we are doing in tech today is actually built upon the well-honed best practices from 20 or so beloved business books.
In case you are curious, below is the list of books successful people have read. Now that we know the types of books that they read, as well as the sheer volume of books read by successful people, let us take a look at some titles recommended over the years by some of the most successful people on earth. It is said that no intelligent person has ever claimed not to read any books. We still have not mentioned what reading has done for Warren Buffett, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, and other wealthy, powerful, successful individuals.
In fact, when Warren Buffett was asked one day what was the secret to his success, he pointed at the pile of books next to him and said, Read 500 pages of these kind of books every day. Warren Buffett has famously stated that Warren Buffett still reads between 600-1,000 pages every day. Buffett takes reading to an extreme: He was reading between 600 to 1,000 pages per day early in his investing career, and still spends roughly 80 percent of every day reading. By Bill Gatess own admission, he reads around 50 books per year, roughly adding up to around 1 book per week.
